Kitchen Design Trends For Fall 2014
Kitchens are a gathering place in your home. Though the furnishings and design of your home might suggest a living room or sitting room for gatherings, we all know that people gather wherever the food is. A kitchen is also a work center of your home – the place where storage, preparation and cooking of food all come together and where your cookware and silverware return for cleaning. Because of the range of needs levied on a kitchen, the space needs to be both inviting and convenient. Trends in kitchen design for fall of 2014 take these needs into account.
Create an Inviting Space Through Simplicity
Simple elements situated in open spaces continue to rule designs in kitchens this fall. In this design paradigm, less is definitely more, but you don’t have to sacrifice convenience to be on top of your fashion game.
Light up the Room
The prevailing trend in kitchens over the past five years has been to install hidden spotlights under cupboards, but we are now seeing a trend toward sconces and other exposed sources of lighting. Rustic copper and brass fixings are becoming quite popular.
Use Natural Materials
Natural materials and tones are taking the world of interior design by storm, and kitchens are not left out of the trend. Just as exposed lighting sources are gaining popularity, so too are exposed natural beams and brick being used to lend kitchens a rustic tone and a natural feel. Natural wood is also showing up in cupboards and, along with stone, in counter tops.
Select Warm Metals
This year has seen a shift away from cold stainless steel and chrome, toward more warm metal tones like copper, brass and even iron. Bold use of these metals in kitchen hoods and appliances continues to gain popularity in 2014.
Consider Open Shelving
Cabinets will continue to be a vital part of most kitchens’ function, but this fall has brought a trend toward open shelving. This not only helps open up the room, but it also has intrinsic design appeal, and it allows people to show off more elements of their kitchens – from tableware to appliances.
Stick With a Color Scheme
Kitchen design for fall of 2014 takes color seriously. Black is back (though we know it never really left), and monochromatic design schemes are popular. Blue continues this fall to also be a very popular accent color in kitchens. To give your kitchen a modern style, select a color scheme and follow through with it throughout the room. Whether it is your faucet, your sink or other accessories in your kitchen, selecting matching colors and metals will give a cohesive look and feel to your kitchen.
